The Classification May Be Right While the Conclusion Does Not Follow

On inference, bridge conditions and the distance between description and consequence

The classification may be right; the conclusion must still cross the bridge.

An object is correctly described as a wrapper. The conclusion follows that it cannot be measured. A metric is correctly described as behavioural. The conclusion follows that it demonstrates structural mechanics. A reviewer is correctly described as operating within a method. The conclusion follows that the method limits what the reviewer can see.

In each case the classification may be accurate. The conclusion may still exceed it.

1. Classification

Classification places an object within a declared category. It can distinguish a wrapper from a weight-level intervention, a behavioural measure from a hardware measure, a reconstruction from a recovery, or a successor from a predecessor.

That work is valuable because it localises the object. It does not automatically determine every consequence associated with the category.

2. The missing bridge

A conclusion requires a relation between the classification and the consequence claimed for it. That relation may depend upon assumptions, causal pathways, measurement conditions, exclusions or domain-specific rules.

Category membership is not a bridge condition.

To say that a system is a wrapper does not establish that it has no measurable behavioural effect. To show a behavioural effect does not establish that the system altered substrate mechanics. To show that a reviewer uses formal criteria does not establish that the reviewer lacks structural resolution.

3. The conclusion does not follow

This phrase does not mean that the conclusion is false. It means that the stated premise has not yet earned it.

The conclusion may later be supported by additional evidence. It may turn out to be correct for another reason. The constitutional defect lies in attributing more consequence to the classification than the declared bridge permits.

4. A bridge record

Before a classification carries a conclusion, ask:

  1. What category has been assigned, and under which definition?

  2. Which consequence is said to follow?

  3. What rule, mechanism or evidence connects the two?

  4. Which alternative consequences remain compatible with the classification?

  5. At what scope does the bridge operate?

  6. What would show that the classification is right but the bridge is wrong?

5. The necessary counterexample

Some classifications do carry consequences by definition. If a triangle is defined as a three-sided polygon, classifying an object as a triangle entails that it has three sides. The rule therefore concerns consequences not already contained in the declared definition.

Where the consequence is substantive, causal, empirical or jurisdictional, the bridge must be shown rather than borrowed from the confidence of the classification.

6. The candidate rule

Where a conclusion exceeds what is contained in a correct classification, the bridge conditions that authorise the conclusion must be declared and remain independently answerable.

7. In closing

A precise classification is often the beginning of analysis, not its conclusion.

The classification is right. The conclusion does not yet follow.
