I am now working closely with a number of researchers, and working with them has generated an observation that appears to have itself scientific value. So, dear reader, you can think of this as a technical update report, as well as a personal log. Somethign I have decided to call a Plog:

Status: Plog — a personal and public log of physically instantiated digital observations. It is exploratory and iterative. This object is intended to be attacked, rewritten, extended, reduced or reconstituted. It is not a frozen Constitutional Physics definition and does not claim empirical validation of Constitutional Physics as a physical theory. A world becomes navigable when its possible transformations have structure.

Premise/ Observation: The current IPI correspondence is beginning to behave less like a sequence of ordinary emails and more like a live, stateful environment. Files acquire identity. Some objects freeze. Exposure changes later eligibility. Gates permit or withhold transitions. Attacks generate successor objects. AI systems participate not only by producing language, but by revealing what they preserve, infer, transform, omit or fabricate when the admissible state of the discussion is deliberately constrained.

The cultural analogy is deliberately familiar: Dungeons & Dragons, early internet sentence- and text-adventure games, and the first generation of explorable three-dimensional game worlds such as the 64-bit-era Zelda experience. The analogy is not offered as proof. It is offered as a compact cultural reference object that can be logged, through which a group with a sufficiently shared cultural intuition can recognise a complicated procedural architecture before deciding what, if anything, that architecture scientifically establishes.

This writing is materially a personal and public observational report.

1. The observation: we are playing a world into legibility

In an ordinary discussion, a sentence is often treated as a transient vehicle for an idea. In the present work, active participants have increasingly treated sentences, emails, attachments, hashes, freezes, attacks and replies as objects capable of acquiring persistent operational consequences. The exchange has a state and game-theoretical context. A later move depends on that state. A proposition cannot simply be rewritten backwards because a later problem would become easier if it had always said something else.

This creates a surprisingly and enjoyably play-like property: the environment is not merely described by the participants; it is altered by their admissible actions. 

I do not claim that this phenomenology is shared by every participant in the IPI group, still less by every later reader meeting the statement. My narrower observation is that, within the conventions presently operating, an actor can propose a next move but cannot unilaterally determine the shared state into which that move will enter. 

It may be accepted, attacked, left unresolved, refused standing, or generate another branch. Nor does “play” require that every participant retrospectively share a single goal; the structured possibility of proposing and responding to moves is sufficient for the analogy being recorded here.

That a proposed move may fail to continue because an earlier condition has not been satisfied, because a required source object was unavailable, because an actor is intentionally unexposed, or because the governing transition has already been frozen does not weaken the analogy. Those failures are themselves among the state-dependent behaviours this Plog is recording as a criticisable and citable object.

The correspondence is simultaneously becoming the discussion, the game board, the rule system and the recoverable history of how the present state came to exist.

2. Three cultural intuitions: text adventure, D&D and spatial game world

Early sentence-based and text-adventure games made state-transition logic explicit because they had almost no visual surface behind which to hide it. The player encountered a textual state, issued an instruction, and received a transformed textual state. Some commands were admissible, some meaningless, some unavailable until another condition had been met. The world existed as a structured field of possible transformations before it existed as a continuously rendered place.

Dungeons & Dragons adds another layer. The world is collaboratively constituted, but collaboration does not imply arbitrary declaration. The player proposes; the prior state, the rules, the dungeon master, evidence and sometimes chance constrain what can legitimately happen next. A history accumulates. Objects are acquired. Capabilities become available. Consequences persist.

The first generation of widely experienced 3D adventure games made the same structure spatially visceral. A door can be visible but not yet traversable. A region can exist in the world while remaining inaccessible to the player. An object acquired earlier can change which operations are possible later. A return to an earlier place does not mean a return to an earlier state: the world may look familiar while the operative history has changed.

For an audience that lived through those cultural transitions—or encountered them indirectly through later cultural representations such as Stranger Things—the analogy requires remarkably little technical preparation. It supplies an intuitive model for state, gate, inventory, admissible transition, persistence, branching history and consequence.

The analogy therefore precedes the terminology: the reader may recognise the operation before being asked to accept a formal vocabulary for it.

3. The game-world correspondence

The table is analogical, not identificatory. No claim follows merely because a game-world concept has a convenient documentary analogue.

4. What the “fifth dimension” is doing in the analogy

The phrase “Five-dimensional chess played between ideas, not personas” predates this particular thought object and already functions as a useful sign-off for the programme. Here the fifth-dimensional metaphor acquires a more operational interpretation through the structure of play.

The additional dimension is not proposed as a literal physical coordinate. It is recoverable constitutional history: who had access to what; which proposition existed in which version; which distinctions had already been earned; what was frozen; which later moves depended upon those facts; and which apparently available moves are disallowed because they would require retrospective repair.

A position is not fully described by what is presently on the board. It also depends on how that position became legitimately reachable under the rules.

This is why the chess analogy and the AI-game-world analogy fit together. Ordinary chess already makes the history of some positions relevant through rules such as castling rights and en passant. This Plog generalises that intuition to the experimental architecture presently being worked through: documentary history can alter what a later object is entitled to claim even where its visible present form appears identical.

5. AI systems as players, engines and diagnostic objects

The involvement of AI makes the analogy more than a metaphor for document management. Across the IPI group, several participants have gone considerable lengths to develop systematic human–AI working environments. My own work has involved a variety of commercially accessible systems. Within the cultural analogy used here, this is where the “64-bit-era” comparison becomes useful—not as a claim about computational architecture, but as a shift in experiential complexity. The environment becomes sufficiently interactive that the rule-governed world can be explored rather than merely described.

These systems are widely accessible enough to be placed within progressively local rule environments: use only earned material; preserve file order; distinguish attack from repair; respect exposure boundaries; do not collapse a residual merely because an interpretation is available and become scientific objects.

The revenge of the nerds all over again, but with email and AI.

The resulting behaviour is empirically observable without requiring a claim that the model possesses human consciousness, intention or a human-like self. The narrower claim required here is only operational agency: the capacity of a system to produce state-dependent externalised actions under locally imposed constraints. 

One can ask what state was available, what instruction was issued, what transformation occurred, what output became externalised, what prior constraints were retained, what unsupported material appeared, what was corrected, and what later moves the output enabled.

That makes apparent failure especially interesting. A false statement, a lost file relation, an invented bridge or a refusal to follow a local protocol may expose a candidate boundary of the system’s operative self-definition—that is, a boundary disclosed by what its own processing and expressive conditions permit it to receive, transform, preserve and externalise.

The system can be studied by playing the rule-governed representational world with it.

6. Language is part of the engine: contextual meaning and constitutional restraint

With my epistemology geek on, I consider that this observation produces a linguistic problem of its own. If the environment is constituted through language, how much lexical ambiguity must a constitutional text eliminate before it can reasonably be said to communicate its operative meaning?

At this stage, an unrestricted demand to eliminate every possible alternate meaning would not be constitutionally consistent with the burden the text itself claims to carry. Constitutional Physics, when read as the presently bounded work specified by its declared terms, scope, limits and operations, does not acquire an obligation to rebut every meaning a word might bear in another ontology, discipline or conversational setting merely because that meaning can be imagined.

Possible lexical ambiguity is not equivalent to material constitutional ambiguity.

The relevant test is narrower: after the proposition is read within its declared purpose, grammar, surrounding definitions and constitutional architecture, do two or more materially different meanings remain reasonably live, and would choosing between them alter the operation, standing, jurisdiction, consequence or other burden the proposition is asked to carry?

This is a restraint on both author and attacker. The author may not use “context” as permission to make any wording mean anything. But the attacker may not strip every word from its operative context, generate a fuller dictionary of possible senses, and then require the constitution to disclaim them one by one. The constitution bears the burden of making the relations it constitutes recoverable; it does not bear the burden of re-deriving the entire ordinary language through which those relations are communicated.

Working test: a lexical alternative becomes constitutionally load-bearing only where it remains genuinely available after contextual interpretation and where the difference changes what the text is entitled to do.

Possible ambiguity ≠ operative ambiguity ≠ material constitutional ambiguity.

7. Self-definition without circular immunity

A constitution that declares its own scope supplies part of the context through which its terms should reasonably be interpreted. That declaration does not make the constitution immune from attack. It does, however, constrain what constitutes a valid attack: criticism should address the object that has actually been constituted, rather than a stronger, weaker, or ontologically different object constructed by the critic.

This becomes particularly relevant to the present authorial log, recorded on 15 August 2026, because Constitutional Physics is not merely being described within it. Portions of its proposed method are being enacted through the correspondence, files, gates, freezes, exposure conditions, provenance records and successor objects generated around its development and publication process.

The declaration of scope, the separation of frozen and successor objects, the preservation of provenance, the prohibition on retrospective semantic repair, and the requirement that proposed mappings remain independently testable are therefore no longer only propositions within a text. They also become observable operations within a localised digital record.

That creates a reflexive object, but not necessarily a circular one.

Self-application ≠ self-validation.

The method may be used to examine the operation of the method provided that self-application does not grant the method the conclusion it is supposed to establish. The fact that Constitutional Physics can describe the documentary process occurring around it does not validate Constitutional Physics. What it does provide is a recoverable opportunity to ask whether the distinctions the framework proposes can actually be instantiated, reconstructed, challenged and preserved within a live communicative environment.

In game language, the rule engine may expose its own rules to inspection, and the history of play may reveal how those rules behave. The engine does not win merely because it can describe the board on which it is being tested.

This is also why the present document is specifically tied to its character as an empirical digital log.

Its empirical object, at this stage, is not the universal validity of Constitutional Physics. It is the localisable history of an interaction: particular participants, particular computational systems, particular documents, particular exposures, particular transformations and particular consequences occurring in recoverable sequence.

The cultural analogy developed in this paper — text adventures, Dungeons & Dragons, early three-dimensional game worlds, rule engines, state transitions and persistent histories — therefore does more than make the experiment easier to explain. It supplies a familiar representational object through which the structure of the interaction can itself be examined.

The analogy is culturally localisable. The digital record is documentarily localisable. The constitutional interpretation remains open to attack.

Together, those three properties allow the log to ask a narrower and more defensible question:

Can a rule-governed scientific language be observed operating upon the very communicative environment through which that language is being constituted, without treating that self-application as evidence of its own truth?

That, I think, is the genuinely interesting self-definition problem I would like to see logged (my motive for sharing and publishing this observation). I consider that:

Reflexivity becomes circular only when self-description is permitted to supply its own warrant. Self-observation, by contrast, can remain an empirical object when its traces, boundaries and failure conditions remain independently inspectable.

This last distinction may become one of this log's more important propositions.

8. Why this cultural reference may be useful scientifically

As a personally reported and publicly logged documentary data object, this Plog also records a practical difficulty: much of the present work consists of inviting people who normally discuss physics, mathematics, computation or scientific method in conventional prose to express parts of those discussions through files, states, versions, gates, freezes, exposure conditions and successor objects. The vocabulary may initially appear eccentric because it foregrounds operational structure that conventional correspondence often leaves implicit, but the reason for retaining it is that, within the correspondence recorded here, it has produced reconstructable distinctions that ordinary prose had previously left implicit.

As a logged linguistic reference, this game-world analogy offers a low-cost common reference. It does not ask a physicist to accept Constitutional Physics in order to understand why a frozen source object should not be rewritten after a mapping fails. It asks only whether they understand why changing an earlier game state after seeing a later obstacle would make the subsequent run a different run.

Likewise, one need not accept an AI-agency thesis to understand why preserving Diana’s exact HAL exchange matters. Anyone familiar with debugging a game engine understands the value of retaining the state that generated an unexpected behaviour rather than “cleaning up” the trace before diagnosing it.

The intention is not to gamify science. It is to notice that games have spent decades making state, conditional access, persistent history and consequence intuitively legible.

9. What this (P)log narrative — personal and public log — does not presently claim

  • It does not claim that Constitutional Physics is validated because the correspondence can be described using its vocabulary. The observed correspondence is an object for analysis, not proof of the framework, nor of any future gamification process derived from it.

  • It does not claim that AI systems are conscious players. The relevant observations concern externalised behaviour under constrained informational states and rule-governed interaction.

  • It does not claim that the “fifth dimension” is a physical dimension. Here it is a cultural and procedural metaphor for recoverable history, path-dependence and operation-relative entitlement.

  • It does not claim that games and scientific governance are equivalent. The analogy concentrates structural intuitions concerning state, permitted transformation, access, memory and consequence; it does not erase disciplinary or ontological differences.

  • It does not claim that contextual interpretation eliminates ambiguity. It rejects only the stronger burden that every imaginable lexical alternative — including interpretations that are technically possible but contextually surplus to the operation under discussion — must be independently and explicitly excluded.

The burden is therefore not to remove every meaning language could conceivably carry, but to make the meaning required for the declared operation sufficiently recoverable that materially competing interpretations can be identified and tested

10. Plog-registered Candidate Questions for the next iteration

  • Can the state of an email-based scientific exchange be represented formally enough that another reader can reconstruct which moves were admissible at a given point?

  • What is the minimum documentary state required to distinguish a genuine successor object from retrospective repair?

  • Can exposure history be treated as a recoverably recordable component of experimental state rather than an informal biographical note?

  • Can AI behaviour under locally constituted rules provide a reproducible diagnostic of representational persistence, confabulation, correction and self-reference?

  • Where does a useful cultural analogy cease to clarify and begin to import an unearned ontology?

  • Can contextual lexical sufficiency be operationalised without collapsing into either exhaustive definition or unrestricted authorial intention?

  • Does a rule-governed correspondence produce transferable methods that survive when the people, theories and subject matter are changed?

But also:

  • Can the revision history of this Plog itself provide a worked test of the distinction between retrospective repair and explicitly identified successor refinement?

  • Can two readers supplied with the same frozen documentary state independently reconstruct the same set of presently admissible next moves?

11. Provisional closing proposition

The most interesting feature of the present exercise may not be that scientific discourse can be made to resemble a game. It may be that the history of games provides an unusually mature cultural vocabulary for something science increasingly needs to make explicit: stateful localisation, rule-governed transformation in environments where history, access, provenance and consequence matter.

Text adventures made this linguistic. D&D made it collaborative. Early 3D worlds made it spatial and intuitive. The current IPI correspondence involving Marcel, Johann, James, Jaime, Diana and me adds a documentary and computational layer in which the communicative environment can preserve hashes of prior states, regulate exposure to source material, and invite human and AI participants to test which transitions can actually be reconstructed without rewriting the past.

Perhaps the experimentally interesting object is not simply the proposition being argued about, but the governed world required for that proposition to become meaningfully discussable at all.
